MacBook and gaming have had a difficult relationship, and almost all of us are aware of that. Since the beginning, PC fans have had the opportunity to play down Mac users solely on the fact that Macs don’t ship with even decent games to begin with.
Times have changed, though. Unlike old times, you can find plenty of games for your MacBook and while they may not come to par with PC games, there’s still plenty to gloat about.
Let’s take a look at some of the finest games you can play on your MacBook!
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Price: $20)
A global phenom when it was released in 1998, the sequel to the blockbuster game carried the legacy on its shoulder with grace. Released in 2010, StarCraft II went on to be claimed as South Korea’s national game given its popularity. This goes on to show how much effort Blizzard may have put into it and really deserve all the praise for it.
The game gives you the option to choose between three factions: Protoss, Zerg, and Terran. If you were to go with the main storyline of the game, you’d have to control Terran, however you still have to option to choose especially when playing multiplayer. This game is designed for you if you love micromanaging. If you’re also good at multitasking, you should definitely give this game a try. There’s a lot happening all at once and you have to keep track of it all and keep an eye out for resources and enemies etc., if you wish to survive. For example, if you get distracted even for a minute (or blink unexpectedly) Zerglings will crash your buildings and you’re done with.
The game is super-fun and entertaining all-rounder. If you’re into game that let you keep your unit close and knitted-together, this StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is definitely for you!
Hearthstone (Free)
Blizzard is no stranger to games that keep you hooked on your mobile devices. But that does not mean that it cannot keep you hooked on your MacBook. While StarCraft was a completely different game, Hearthstone will have you hooked on its simplicity. Yes, you can play your favorite game on your MacBook too.
Hearthstone has a simple gameplay to learn because the mechanics are easy-to-learn. Even the playtime is super fast if you grasp on the concept early on, so basically you can zip through several fights at a time if you’re up to it. The game makes sure that you are matched with equal footing players so the battles are fair and evenly-matched.
And oh, Hearthstone comes from one Blizzard’s most popular title: Warcraft. So if you’ve heard of Murloc, then yes, you can send an army of them at your opponent and rendering them completely weak before laying down the flag of victory.
Portal 2 (Price: $19.99)
This is a puzzle game as addictive as can be. It’s a mainly a first-person shooter, though, and you take on the role of Chell, the protagonist of the game and you are also present in somewhat of an Aperture Science world. As Chell, you have to break out of the huge Aperture research facility and free yourself from its shackles using the only weapon you have been armed with: the iconic portal gun!
Portal 2 will have you use the objects around you and even take advantage of the environment you are in. Sometimes you’ll even have to take advantage of yourself, and while the game is pretty serious in nature, don’t worry, because on many turns and places you’ll be relieved with timely comedy. Overall, Portal 2 is a game you really shouldn’t miss out on!
Minecraft (Price: $27)
Minecraft may not seem like a dream game for you at first, but no one can deny that it has gained immense popularity since releasing in 2009. It may even look childish at first given the 2D-3D mashed up world made up of blocks. As you play the game, you are armed with nothing but you get the freedom to start building your empire over a large expanse of land.
You can mine for gold and diamond and build a hut if you wish, but you also have to keep an eye out for zombies and other enemies who might destroy your creations. To be honest, this is one of the most simple and easy games you’ll play, but on the flip side, it’s one of the most addictive game as well.
It’s a pixelated word made up of 8-bit graphics (block world) that, as I said, wouldn’t appeal to you at first. But once you start playing, it’s really difficult to give it a rest. So go ahead and start building up and empire for yourself as well!
League of Legends & Dota 2 (Free)
Most games list without the mention of the legendary (pun intended) League of Legends are not complete. And while Macs are notorious for not having the best game titles out there, League of Legends and Dota 2 more than make up for those accused shortcomings. Especially if you’re a fan of the multiplayer role-playing games, and you’re porting to Mac, you’re in some serious luck. League of Legends and Dota 2 have legions of fans around the world and even if you’re not familiar with the game for now, it won’t take you long before the community brings you in the loop.
These are the top 5 must have MacBook games you should give a spin on on your Mac. While there are hundreds of more titles on the MacOS contrary to the popular belief, you can’t go wrong with these titles, so go on and give them a try!
